Reason #24 to attend Mountain-Con:
Klingons and Hobbits and Pirates, Oh My!
- Extended Deadline: Mountain-Con's latest discounted rate ($40 per adult/$20 per child for the 3-day admission) has been extended until September 12, 2008. Visit http://www.mountaincon.org/NOW to get your discounted tickets. (Prices increase at the door.)
- Banquet Price Reduced: We have decided to drop the price of our popular "Banquet With The Stars" from $100 per person to $85 per person. Remember, the Banquet includes a mix & mingle as well as a photo with the stars.
- Auditions Class: Richard Herd, who has been a working actor for decades, is offering a 90-minute class on how to audition for jobs. This exciting opportunity to learn from a "name" in the industry is just $25 per person (with paid admission to Mountain-Con). The class will be held Sunday, September 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
- Salt Lake Area billboards: Mountain-Con has finally caught up with 21st Century advertising ideas and has purchased time on two electronic billboards this year. Because of the nature of these billboards, you can actually see our ads by going to the Digital Advertising Company's website: http://dacsigns.com/ ... one in downtown Salt Lake City, the other in Sandy. (Just click the appropriate link.)

Now back to the Klingons...and the Hobbits...and the Pirates... and the Vampires... and Wookies... and the Justice League... etc.
Mountain-Con has a wide variety of things to see and do...things that will fit every taste. The schedule includes Question & Answer sessions from all of our guests, panels on everything from writing to film-making to world-building (for gaming and/or for writing) to games, and miniature contests.
Some of the panel titles include "I Need a Hiro" (a discussion of NBC Television's Heroes), "Pirates in Science Fiction" (enjoying pirate-based stories in the science fiction genre), "How to Write Fanfic That Doesn't Suck", "Sci-Fi Jeopardy" (a Jeopardy-like game with science fiction based answers), "What the Filk Is Going On?" (a discussion of filking), and "POTCO and DDO and W-O-W, Oh My!" (a discussion of massively online multi-player role playing games and their appeal).

Additionally there are Photo Ops with the individual stars, special screenings of "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" and "InAlienable", the Banquet with the Stars, Sarah Douglas's special event "Resident Alien" and Richard Herd's auditions class.
None of the aforementioned titles includes our gaming schedule, our media room or our anime room, each of which is running without a break from open until close. This year our gaming chairs are proud to offer some special gaming tournaments, including a "Magic: The Gathering" tournament and "Living Forgotten Realms". (See our website for scheduling information under "About Mountain-Con" and then the appropriately named tab.)
We'll also have our costume contest/masquerade, dealer's room, a "meet the clubs" section, KidCon (for the under-twelves), and either a dance or karaoke.
If tradition holds out, many of the attending clubs will be throwing "room parties". This will be a time to get to know the individual clubs in and around the area. It is also a time to meet new friends and renew old acquaintances. It is also another reason to reserve a hotel room. (wink, wink)

* Due to professional commitments, Mr. Kevin Sorbo is no longer able to attend Mountain-Con. Also, Mr. Mark Goddard has a personal conflict with our convention dates. Please stay tuned to our Web site for up-to-date information on replacements.
Reason #17 to attend Mountain-Con:
Mark Goddard
Wow! Mountain-Con is only about two months away, and here we are announcing another of our major guests... Mr. Mark Goddard, famous for his role as Major Don West in the original "Lost In Space" television series. He also played a General in the "Lost In Space" movie (with Heather Graham, Matt LeBlanc, and William Hurt).
We mentioned back in "Reason #6" that a few of the B-9 robots from "Lost In Space" would be attending Mountain-Con...and we've decided to place them near Mr. Goddard's table. (Remember...the robots are cool to look at, but no touching!)
Mr. Goddard has also appeared in several soap operas, including One Life to Live, General Hospital, and more. In addition, Mr. Goddard appeared in several television western series including "Gunsmoke", "The Rifleman", and "The Virginian". According to IMDB, his most recent role is Steve in the soon-to-be released film "Soupernatural".
So...visit www.mountaincon.org for your tickets, links to the hotel, and scheduling information...and be on the lookout for additional guests to be announced over the next few weeks.
(Reminder: Pre-sale tickets for an adult, 3-day Mountain-Con VI pass are $40. After August 31st, we will discontinue the pre-sale registration and sell tickets at the door for $45. Single-day rates are also available at the door.)

Attention residents of the greater Salt Lake City and greater Ogden areas (and those who work there and/or are otherwise able to support us there)...
This year, Mountain-Con is running TNT Fireworks stands at two locations to support the cause of fandom. Those locations are:
- Salt Lake City area:
- 6525 S. State Street in Murray, UT
- Sam's Club parking lot
- Ogden area:
- 3042 Washington Boulevard in Ogden, UT
- Carlo's Produce parking lot
Both stands will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. from Saturday June 28th through Saturday July 5th, 2008. Depending on availability, the stands may open on the 23rd & 24th as well (for Pioneer Day).
If you plan to purchase fireworks for your family Independence Day celebration, please visit one of our locations. (Rumor has it that the "Trojan Rabbit" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail will be at the Salt Lake location on the 28th.)
It's been about three weeks since we highlighted one of our awesome guests, so I guess it's time to do so again.
Reason #11 to attend Mountain-Con:
Herb Jefferson Jr.
Mr. Herb Jefferson Jr. may be known best for his role as "Boomer" on the original Battlestar Galactica, but is by no means the whole of his career. Some of Mr. Jefferson's other roles include Baxter in "Columbo: Playback", Muntzy in "Knight Rider: Knight of the Phoenix" (i.e. the "Knight Rider" pilot), Otis Barnes in "The Devlin Connection", and a news reporter in "Apollo 13." Mr. Jefferson has guest starred in numerous television shows, including "Airwolf", "The Dukes of Hazzard", "Mission: Impossible", "ER", and "Hill Street Blues".
Mr. Jefferson's latest role is an appearance in the film: "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men", which will be shown in its entirety at Mountain-Con this September (see "Reason" #9).
Herb Jefferson Jr. is also supporter of our Armed Forces, and is involved in organizations like the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve "Toys For Tots" program, the USO, and the California Paralyzed Veterans Association. As Mountain-Con will be near Hill Air Force base this year, we hope that the soldiers will come out and visit with Mr. Jefferson, who would be pleased to see all of you!

For those who have never been to a fandom convention before, there is a good statement from author Bev Hale. Either you'll think "these are my people" or you'll run away screaming. (Thanks for the quote, Bev!)
In that vein, Mountain-Con has something for every person no matter the fandom, the age, the interest, or the talent. You only have to read some of our previous "Reasons" to see that!
The different genres of fandoms we represent include science fiction such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity, etc. Fantasy fandoms include Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, and so on. Horror fandoms include Anne Rice and Stephen King, the Camarilla, Buffy/Angel, and much more. Oh, and we can't forget the real science, computers, and general "geekdom" genre!
Types of fandoms at Mountain-Con include meeting stars and getting autographs (if desired), gaming, filking, costuming, writing fan fiction, making fan films, and many different combinations of the above (such as cosplay...a combination of costuming and role-play).
As a family-friendly convention, Mountain-Con serves all ages. For the very young we have our own kid-friendly programming track called "KidCon". For the adults, we have other things...like a banquet with the stars and other such activities. And, of course, there are panels and games that families can attend together...if you want to.
If you've never attended an adventurer / anime / costuming / fantasy / filk / furry / gaming / geekdom / horror / pirates / sci-fi / superhero / etc. convention before, give us a try. You may find that we're your people...or you'll run away screaming. :-)

Mountain-Con has the unique opportunity to show all three parts of "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men", starring former Mountain-Con guests Walter Koenig, Garrett Wang, and Chase Masterson and Mountain-Con 4 guest Herb Jefferson. ("Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" also stars Nichelle Nichols, and Alan Ruck with Ethan Phillips, Cirroc Lofton, JG Hertzler, Gary Graham, and Tim Russ.)
Of Gods and Men is set in an alternate reality, and it is fun to see some of our favorite characters in situations you never thought you'd see. Come join us for this unique opportunity!
You can find out more about "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" at their Web site: http://www.startrekofgodsandmen.net.

Sarah Douglas
Although we may recognize her best as "Ursa", General Zod's right-hand woman in the first two Superman movies (starring Christopher Reeve), Ms. Douglas is an accomplished actress who has been in several of our favorite shows...
Some of Ms. Douglas's other science fiction, fantasy, and horror roles include:
- "Pamela" in V: The Final Battle (television series)
- "Queen Taramis" in Conan the Destroyer
- "Dr. Lana Zurell" in Return of the Swamp Thing
- "Lyranna Tagget" in Beastmaster 2
- "Elsa Toulon" in Puppet Master III
- "Lt. Col. Sinclair" in Return of the Living Dead III
- "B" in a Space 1999 episode
- "Lady Whitehurst" in an episode of The Wizard
- "Deathwalker/Jha'Dur" in an episode of Babylon 5
- "Yosuuf/Garshaw of Belote" in an episode of Stargate SG-1
Ms. Douglas also starred as "Pamela Lynch" on Falcon Crest, which ran for two years ('83 - '85) and has had several other guest starring roles on Magnum P.I., The Love Boat, The Return of The Saint, Matlock, Remington Steele, and many others.
Ms. Douglas has offered a very rare event she calls "An Evening with Sarah Douglas", which is an intimate gathering of people that lasts for about 90 minutes. It is a private event, and has never been held outside of England ... until now. "An Evening with Sarah Douglas" is a special event at Mountain-Con, and thus has an additional fee.

It's that time of week again, when we tell you what is new and exciting with Mountain-Con. But first...a reminder.
The official Mountain-Con hotel is the Hilton Garden Inn Salt Lake City/Layton, at which we have the great room rate of $89/night, no matter how many people are in the room. (Mountain-Con room rates are available by calling 801-416-8899 or by going to an exclusive room reservation Web site.)
Reason #7 to attend Mountain-Con:
Club Fahrenheit 451
The Hilton Garden Inn Salt Lake City/Layton (connected to the convention center) has a private club/bar named "Club Fahrenheit". Club Fahrenheit has agreed to (temporarily) change its name for the duration of Mountain-Con 4...to Club Fahrenheit 451.
Not only will Club Fahrenheit 451 have a new name from September 19-23, 2008...they will have a specialized beverage list. Here's an example of a few of the drinks:
- Blood Wine
- Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
- Blue Milk
- Ambrosia
- Brevari
- Why is the Rum Gone?
- Black Rider
- Firefly
- Black Hole
- Viper Pilot
Some of the food menu items will also be renamed.
There is also a rumor that the Club Fahrenheit 451 staff will be in costume. (We hear they are as "geeked out" about the whole prospect as we are.)

It's that time of week again, when we tell you what is new and exciting with Mountain-Con...
Reason #6 to attend Mountain-Con:
Cool props
Mountain-Con is lucky to have some great prop-makers on staff. In addition, this year we are going to have some life sized B9 robots (the kind from "Lost in Space") coming all the way from Colorado.
Visit the props page on our Web site.
These (really COOL) robots were built by a gentleman who is known on our forums as "ColoradoDroid" (and his friends). ColoradoDroid has said that he's also working on a life sized remote control R2D2 robot. (Bring that next year, eh?)
The Stargate, on the other hand, has been a staple at Mountain-Con ever since the first convention.
Originally built for a costuming convention, Mountain-Con was able to take possession of the Stargate prop. It served us well for two conventions, and now lives somewhere on the West Coast. The second Stargate was built specifically for Mountain-Con III...and we had some issues when it was put up (too much stress...it broke during setup). There is another one in process for Mountain-Con 4.
Check out this video from You Tube which will explain the "Saga of the Stargate".
(Note: we have yet to bury the second one in the desert...but we want to. Any volunteers?)

Reason #4 to attend Mountain-Con:
"Location, location, location!"
This year Mountain-Con will be held at the Davis Conference Center, located at 1651 North 700 West in Layton, Utah. (Layton is about 1/2 hour north of downtown Salt Lake.)
The Davis Conference Center is a beautiful new convention center with state-of-the-art technology. Let's just say that the convention organizers are a bit "geeked out" about the amenities there. You can learn more about the conference center at http://davisconferencecenter.com.
The Davis Conference Center is also connected to the Hilton Garden Inn in Layton, Utah. Our specially negotiated convention room rate at the hotel is $89.00 per night, with either 2 queen beds or 2 double beds in each room.
A link to the room reservation page is on our Web site, or you could just click here. You may also call 1-801-416-8899 to receive this rate.
One more thing...
Next week's "Reason" will be an announcement "worthy of the gods". Don't miss it, or we'll hunt you down!
